As summer comes to an end, H.E.L.P. Organization made it a mission to assist families in preparing students for a successful  school year. Partnering with local organizations such as Dunkin' Donuts, we were able to provide backpacks and supplies to over 200 students for the upcoming school year. A separate event was a held at the School Board of Highlands County, providing schools directly with additional backpacks and supplies for families in need. Several elementary and middle schools were gifted with the materials to alleviate the financial burden on parents all while ensuring students have the resources needed to excel this school year.

August 3, 2023 members of the community were invited to come and get backpacks - filled with school supplies free of charge. We were able to help the first 200 families that came out. The owner of Dunkin Donuts worked in collaboration with H.E.L.P. Organization to provide a space for the event as well as getting the supplies to everyone safely.

August 9, 2023 H.E.L.P. worked together in partnership with Forever Living and Wings of Faith Church, Together 5 local schools were provided with supplies and backpacks to distribute amongst students in need. Principals representing each school met at the School Board of Highlands County office and were gifted the supplies before the first day of school. Superintendent Ms. Brenda Longshore helped to gather schools in need which brought much needed relief. Sun-N-Lake Elementary, Memorial Elementary, Woodlawn Elementary, Cracker Trail Elementary, and Fred Wild Elementary participated in this event. Hill-Gustat and Sebring Middle also received backpacks to give to students.

Icing on the Doughnut - After school program's kids apply their decorative touch

Kids from the FLASH STARS Achievement Center enjoyed an outing to the south Sebring Dunkin’ Donuts recently to decorate their own doughnuts and then eat their creations with a glass of lemonade.

H.E.L.P. Organization President Billy Shannon and south Sebring Dunkin’ Donuts owner Shadee Stevens teamed up once again for the fun experience for the kids on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Shannon said Wednesday that donations to “thehelporganization.com” will help Vernetta (Miss Vern) Bolton’s FLASH STARS after-school program, at 408 N. Ridgewood Drive. Bolton will be needing donations for food and snacks and supplies.

Bolton said she has been working with kids for 29 years and this is her second year since the Flash Stars has been open.

“I am excited on the adventure I am on with the kids during the summer and we are ready to have a fun time,” she said, “This is our second week being open [for the summer] and we are just privileged and honored to be part of this Dunkin’ Donuts.”

The Wednesday group of kids numbered 12 who were eager to get to decorating their doughnuts.

Stevens asked how many liked doughnuts and all the kids raised their hands.

He explained that each one of them would get two doughnuts to decorate with the icing choices being blue, green, purple, chocolate and strawberry.

Stevens checked each kid’s decorated doughnuts to offer a good word on their creativity.

Stevens said, “They are better than me. I am going to retire and let them take over for me.”

The south Sebring Dunkin’ Donuts averages about 600 to 700 doughnuts per day, he said, and it is hard keeping up. He joked that now they can see the “future with these kids making great doughnuts.”

The H.E.L.P. (Help Every Living Person) organization Inc. is a 501 C-3 non-profit organization in Sebring.
